The cost of parking in Civic has been hiked up to 12 per cent higher
Canberra motorist will be hit with hikes in their parking fees of more than 12 per cent in some areas of the city from early 2013.
The price of all-day parking in government-owned car parks in Civic will increase from $12 to $13.50 a day while short stay, four-hour spots will cost $12.50 for hours.
In the town centres, an all-day park commuter park will cost $9 and a two-hour spot will be $3.
The Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate's Executive Director of City Planning Erin Brady encouraged commuter to use park and ride parks in the suburbs or catch the bus to work instead of driving.

“The ACT government is building a network of park-and-ride facilities to give people who park in these areas the option of mixing car-use with bus-use,” Dr Brady said.
“Significant investments have also been made to existing infrastructure such as bus-lane extensions on the Belconnen-to-City corridor, bus-lane building on Canberra Avenue, real-time information systems for bus-users, and the Civic cycle-loop.
“The ACT government has a strong commitment to achieving a sustainable transport system for the ACT and this is one aspect of this commitment.
The planning chief said that parking in Canberra was still competitive, compared to other Australian cities.
“Despite this increase, Canberra still has the cheapest city centre parking (day rate) of any major Australian city,” Dr Brady said.
The government says income from parking fees is used to provide maintenance of parking and fund improvements in the transport system.
